Changing the timing belt on a Renault Clio is something that you know or do you need help? If you do, you will learn all about Renault Clio timing belt replacement for sure. Stay with us for a couple of minutes!
Many of Renault’s vehicles include the Clio II 1.6 16V engine, which comes in a variety of engine displacements. There are a few faults that we frequently see made when changing timing belts that might harm the belt drive. We offer some installation advice for mechanics to make sure this operation goes as smoothly as possible.
Renault Clio Timing Belt Replacement
First off, the tension pulley, guide pulley, and water pump are not in their place at the same time as the timing belt. For all cars made up to 1999, Renault advises changing the belt every 100,000 km, and for models made after 1999 or with low mileage, every 120,000 km.
A crankshaft locking pin (Renault tool code: MOT1489) and a camshaft alignment ruler are for this, according to mechanics (Renault tool code: MOT1496). The Clio typically takes two hours and forty-five minutes to work, the Megane takes three hours and forty minutes, the Megane Scénic takes three hours and fifty minutes, and the Laguna takes two hours and thirty minutes.
Preliminary Work
Use the engine code on the engine block (below) to identify the car, and then unplug the battery.
Removal
Support the engine while draining the cooling liquid. Then, take off the drive belt-equipped ancillary devices after removing the right engine mount (V-ribbed belts). Before moving the crankshaft to the right to the setting position, remove the plugs from the cylinder block and the back end of the camshaft.
- The camshaft grooves must be aligned.
- The grooves are just below the cylinder head’s top edge.
After that, make sure the crank web is up against the locking pin when you insert it into the cylinder block. - Apply the alignment ruler next to the camshafts’ back end. With a big screwdriver or another suitable tool, secure the flywheel, then remove the crankshaft belt pulley screw.
- It notes that the flywheel must be properly with block to prevent damage to the locking pin. The camshaft ruler, or the camshaft itself from the crankshaft screw being loosened too.
- Remove the crankshaft belt pulley by removing the screw, then remove the pulley. The top and bottom timing belt cover you need to remove. The tension pulley should be loosened so that it can separate from the belt.
- The tension pulley nut, tension pulley, guide pulley, timing belt, and water pump can all be removed at this point.
- The crankshaft gear mustn’t come loose.
Installation
Verify that the locking pin is in place. You must press the locking pin against the crankshaft. The grooves in the camshafts must be aligned. Before installing the new water pump, make sure the alignment ruler is properly.
Remove any remaining seals and thoroughly clean the sealing surface between the engine block and water pump (below). Additionally, take attention to how securely the bolt holding the tension pulley in the water pump casing is fastened.
New guide pulley installed, tightened to 45Nm. Install the new tension pulley after that, and temporarily tighten the nut to 7Nm. Make that the retainer clip on the tension pulley’s back side properly engages with the groove in the water pump housing.
Ungrease the crankshaft’s end after removing the crankshaft gear. Crankshaft gear replacement. Starting at the crankshaft gear, install the timing belt such that it circles to the left. Verify that the timing belt is securely fastened on the load side.
The crankshaft belt pulley should be installed after being degreased. The crankshaft belt pulley screw should not be longer than 49.1mm when measured. You must use a new screw if the existing one is longer. The crankshaft belt pulley screw should be installed, but do not oil the fresh screw. For the time being, tighten the screw while maintaining a 2-3 mm space between its contact surface and the crankshaft belt pulley.

Final Steps For Renault Clio Timing Belt Replacement
The tension pulley nut should be loosened. Using a 6mm hex key, rotate the tension pulley to the right until the moveable pointer reaches the correct stop. The movable point should be 7-8mm behind the fixed pointer, as noted.
For the time being, tighten the tension pulley nut, which requires a 7Nm torque to do so. With a big screwdriver, block the flywheel and temporarily tighten the crankshaft belt pulley screw (tightening torque: 20Nm). Before blocking the flywheel with a large screwdriver and tightening the crankshaft belt pulley screw by an additional 120-150, remove the locking pin and the alignment ruler.
This step is crucial: move the crankshaft two rotations to the right to enter the setting position. If you don’t do this, the belt drive will start making noise soon from not having enough tension. Make sure the crank web is up against the locking pin as you insert it into the cylinder block. Check to see if the camshaft alignment ruler can work simply.
With a 6mm hex key, lock the tension pulley and then loosen it. Once the pointer is in line up with the notch, turn the tension pulley to the left. Remove the locking pin after tightening the tension pulley nut to 27Nm.
Once more, shift the engine into drive, verify the setting, and make any required adjustments. Replace the plug at the end of the camshaft by turning it in. Fill the cooling water reservoir and vent the cooling system before installing the components in the reverse order of removal. It’s very simple if you can perform Renault Clio timing belt replacement by yourself!
