This post should make it easier for you to classify different types of angles with names, pictures, and graphic examples! In the classification presented below on this page, measures in degrees will be used.
Different Types Of Angles Up To 360 Degrees
Let’s start by talking about the angles that we classify according to their size. In the beginning, we will classify the angles that have a maximum of 360 degrees! If we emphasize these types of angles, then we can talk about:
- Acute angle, a<90
- Right angle, a=90
- Obtuse angle, 90<a<180
- Straight angle, a=180
- Reflection angle, 180<a<360
- Full Rotation – Full circle, a=360
Acute Angle
An acute angle is an angle whose size is less than 90 degrees. For example, angles that measure 12, 15, 24, 30, 45, or 89 degrees are acute angles. An angle that has a size of 91 degrees is not acute, because its size is greater than 90 degrees (91>90). In the picture below you can see what an acute angle looks like!
a<90
Right Angle
A right angle is an angle whose size is exactly 90 degrees. All angles that have a different size than 90 degrees cannot be called right angles! In the picture below you can see what a right angle looks like!
a=90
Obtuse Angle
An obtuse angle is an angle that is greater than 90 degrees and less than 180 degrees. For example, angles that measure 95, 100, 150, 125, 120, or 155 degrees are obtuse angles. An angle that has a size of 89 degrees is not obtuse, because its size is less than 90 degrees (89<90). An angle that is 185 degrees is not obtuse, because its size is greater than 180 degrees (185>180). In the picture below you can see what a sharp angle looks like!
90<a<180
Straight Angle
A straight angle is an angle that has a size of exactly 180 degrees. All angles that have a different size than 180 degrees cannot be called straight angles! In the picture below you can see what a straight angle looks like!
a=180
Reflex Angle
A reflex angle is an angle that is greater than 180 degrees and less than 360 degrees. For example, angles that measure 185, 190, 220, 250, 270, or 325 degrees are reflex angles. An angle that has a size of 179 degrees is not reflex, because its size is less than 180 degrees (179<180). An angle that is 365 degrees is not reflex, because its size is greater than 360 degrees (365>360). In the image below you can see what a reflex angle looks like!
180<a<360
Full Rotation
Full rotation – Full circle – full turn – an angle that is exactly 360 degrees. An angle subtends a full circle if it measures exactly 360 degrees.
a=360
Different Types Of Angles That Are Greater Than 360 Degrees
Some angles are greater than 360 degrees. Although logic tells us the opposite, angles greater than 360 degrees do exist. We can think of these angles as one (or more) turning of a full circle, plus a certain angle that falls into one of the categories of angles that we have already listed above in this text.
Example 1: An angle of 380 degrees can be imagined in the following way:
380=360+20
This means that an angle of 380 degrees is an angle that covers one full circle plus 20 degrees of the second circle.
Example 2: An angle of 780 degrees can be imagined in the following way:
780=2×360+60
This means that an angle of 780 degrees is an angle that occupies two full circles of 360 degrees plus 60 degrees of the third circle.
In the video below you can see a graphic video display of different types of angles. This video can help you to understand more easily what all the different types of angles are, and to visualize them so that you can more easily recognize and detect them in everyday life. We recommend you watch this short video which is very useful!
